Why LOOK Mountain Bikes are so respected

By Alan Hartridge

The French certainly take their cycling seriously. That's why when you say that one manufacturer has won French bike of the year four times you know that they're doing something right. LOOK are a small, independent company that started out as a ski manufacturer, but their designs continue to bring cycling forwards in the world today. They gave us the first clipless pedals, and the first fully carbon framed racing bike, but they're not about to rest on their laurels.

LOOK mountain bikes are incredible in the way that they bring advances in road bike technology into a fully integrated MTB concept. Taking a look at their integrated A stem is a good way to get a feel for this. There aren't many manufacturers that can supply that kind of direct drive to an MTB and make it work. It takes a lot of precision engineering, but the result is something that gives you incredibly high performance handling, and provides an overall safer base for riding.

Improving lateral rigidity is a big ambition for LOOK, as they've pinpointed this to be a weakness in existing MTB designs. The fully carbon, lightweight frames that they've brought in on the 920 for example, are brilliant at giving that more solid feel. It actually takes more than a day to create just one of these frames, and once it's finished it's then put through hours of testing which go way beyond what's stipulated by industry standards. So you're getting something at the end of the process which is of the very highest quality.

The anti skat kinematics in the 920 are an incredible piece of engineering. It has rear suspension based on a single pivot and rocker to reduce the 'skat' effect. In simple terms this means it feels like a hard tail bike, while providing the full comfort that you get from having rear suspension.

This is why LOOK bikes command the prestige and the price tag that they do. They really are exception machines.
