Prevent Saddle Sores By Applying Chamois Cream

By Janelle Willard

Individuals taking their bicycles for long rides, whether competing or training, are prone to a skin condition called saddle sores. Such occurs on the buttocks, brought about by excessive friction. The key is to prevent such from happening, and this can be done with the use of a good chamois cream.

The primary role of this product is to reduce friction between the skin of the buttocks and the bicycle's saddle. Without its application, skin abrasion may take place after a drawn out riding. This may end up infected due to the proliferation of bacteria. Such is prone to infection as the area where the problem occurs is often warm and moist.

Even if your bicycle has a good saddle and you're wearing a padded pair of shorts, you're not exempted from this skin condition. That's why you should apply the product where necessary if you're anticipating riding your bicycle for extended time periods. It will help reduce friction where it commonly occurs.

However, not all products out there are made the same. Look for something that has a thick consistency. This will still go on providing protection even with the presence of sweat. Some of them come with antibacterial formulations. This is beneficial in minimizing infection when the skin gets abraded.

Some people may use petroleum jelly or lubricating gel. However, it's best to use a product specifically designed for this problem bicyclist may encounter from time to time. Manufacturers have conducted researches in making sure that their products deliver results other alternatives may not be able to completely provide.

Prior to taking your bicycle for a long ride, make sure to apply chamois cream. Do so with clean hands, especially if you already suffer from mild skin abrasions. It will also help if you adjust the saddle properly and carry out other necessary fine-tuning with your bicycle to help in reducing the problem.
