When Considering Merino Wool Cycling Jersey

By Geneva Anthony

Experienced cyclists will often choose merino wool cycling jersey instead of a man made one. The advantages of natural fibers over synthetic are many that are not only positive but hard to ignore. The more experienced a rider is the more they seem to come back to choosing clothing made of natural fabric instead of synthetic.

Few realize that before the invention of man made materials, cyclists clothes were exclusively made of wool. This type of fabric naturally wicks moisture and sweat away from the body allowing the rider to retain body heat. Most early synthetic material became wet with moisture and caused the rider to lose body heat and become cold while riding.

While Merino can indeed get wet it still retains its ability to do its job regardless of the among of moisture. Perspiration is always a problem for anyone doing something physical, a cyclist often deals with perspiration. However they also deal with moisture coming from the atmosphere in the form of a shower. Making sure the body remains moisture free is a natural fabrics greatest advantage.

Man made synthetics are not green, instead they are made of petroleum. Cycling has little impact on the environment so many riders prefer to make sure their clothing also is low impact. Merino is a natural fabric that is harvested from certain sheep and is sustainable.

Some cyclists can no longer wear synthetic materials due to the harm on their skin. Natural fabrics are acclaimed by dermatologists as the perfect way to prevent further skin irritations. These all natural solutions will not irritate the skin like man made materials often do.

Anyone that has ever worn man made materials will instantly be familiar with the odor these materials have. These odors persist regardless of how many times the shirt is laundered. Merino on the other hand does not have a foul odor no matter how many times it is cleaned.

Smart cyclists are once again opting for a merino wool jersey over a synthetic one. Switching to wearing natural fabrics is perfect to reduce irritation as well as being a green clothing. A riders clothes should be the last of their concerns during a ride and more time then not synthetic materials seem to be a cause of concern.
