Campers and Caravaners told not to cut corners when booking their travel insurance this coming summer

By Lorenzo von Matterhorn

The New Year is upon us and with that comes the need to start thinking and planning out your summer holidays and booking your time off work for your caravan getaways and camping trips. Moneysupermarket.com, the UK's top price comparison site, has stressed that Brits booking or planning their holidays shouldn't overlook travel insurance. Moneysupermarket combed their database of UK based insurers to discover the best deals available for campers and caravaners. E&L Insurance came out on best, offering camping cover from 16 per year with protection of up to 10,000 worth of camping equipment and driver cover with their 88 per year caravan cover.

Bob Atkinson, an over 65 travel insurance expert from Moneysupermarket.com told us: "Protecting expensive camping equipment should be a priority. Tents can be left unguarded for hours at a time, so it's unwise to leave valuables lying around. Check with your provider about the terms and conditions of your home insurance policy to see if it covers you for possessions away from home - it may be something that you have to add to a standard policy so double check this with your insurer."

While it's extremely important to have cover for our holidays, people tend to forget about cover for the journey there. Bank holiday traffic is notoriously busy and a good breakdown cover could be instrumental in ensuring that any hold-up is sorted quick sharp and you reach your destination on time and in one piece. Equally, roadside assistance is a real must for the unlucky among us who break down in the middle of nowhere on foreign soil, unable to speak a word of the native tongue.

Mr Atkinson commented: "There are no excuses for motorists not to take out a breakdown policy, if you are relying on your car to get you to your destination it makes sense to ensure you have a breakdown policy that will ensure you don't end up with a trip spent stuck at the side of the road. Cover starts as soon you register, so there is still time to purchase a policy to safeguard your Easter travels. A range of products are available offering competitive prices for motorists. We don't realise how much we depend on our cars until a breakdown happens, and not having adequate protection in place could mean your UK holiday comes to an early end.

He said: "The same principle applies to insuring your caravan as you would your car, and some breakdown policies will include this cover as standard. If this is not the case, taking out separate insurance is a must just in case something happens to it, or the driver."

Remember to check for additional extras such as caravan cover, roadside assistance and onward travel when you're looking into breakdown cover. Rescuemycar.com offers policies from just 31 per year for UK-based cover, or 54 for single trip cover for holidays in Europe.

Lastly, the majority home and contents policies offer bicycle cover as an added extra, costing as little as 97 from the Bank of Scotland. For the serious bikers among us, who own the serious kit, however, a dedicated policy will offer more comprehensive protection, with cover starting from 56 p/a with AUA Insurance which covers the policyholder for accidental damage, loss and theft as well as offering up to 1,000,000 personal liability.

Travellers ought to remember to look into whether their bicycle insurance policy would provide cover overseas; play it safe and make sure you research the policies out there to make sure you get the best deal possible for your summer jollies.
