Mountain Biking And Its 9 Categories

By Sue Ellis

There are 9 different categories of mountain biking. When it comes to these categories, they're very versed in what they offer. These include:

BMX. BMX is a style where the bikes offer 20 inch wheels. Commonly used at skate parks or dirt jumps are these bikes. BMX bikes have smaller wheels and shorter wheel bases which means performing stunts and tricks are easier.

What is cross country? With this type of mountain biking, you'll be riding your bike up and down hills. It may be the least extreme form of mountain biking but most of these riders are fit and can go on long rides.

Cyclo cross. This is a cross between road and mountain biking. Racing on and off course, going over obstacles, and crossing through rivers is what these riders would do.

Facts about dirt jumping. Jumping over large, man made dirt jumps and doing tricks while in the air is what dirt jumping riders do. Normally, these jumps are close together which means in one run, riders can jump over 6 or more times, gaining a flow in which to give them more speed for bigger jumps.

Downhill. Racing downhill as fast as possible is what downhill mountain biking is. This type of riding is very intense and extreme, offering riders the chance for ultimate thrills and excitement.

Facts about free ride. When it comes to free riding, the rider finds the perfect line down the mountain using all of the terrain in order to express himself. These are popular competitions because riders can express themselves the way they stay fit.

Single speed. This isn't fixed gears but rather a form of cross country biking that's done by using a bike with fewer components and one gear. Simplicity is the idea with single speed. Because of lack of components, the bike will be lighter and there will be less mechanical problems as well as efficient pedaling provided by the straight chain line.

Facts about street and urban. This type of riding involves riding in urban areas, ledges, and other types of man made obstacles. Street and urban biking riders will do stalls, grinds, and other such tricks.

Facts about trails. When it comes to trails, the bikes used look nothing like mountain bikes but it's still considered an aspect of mountain biking. Wheels that are 20-26 inches are used and they also have frames that are low and small. Trail riders will hop and jump their bikes over obstacles, which requires an extreme amount of balance and concentration.
