The Beauty of Aluminium Kozijnen Bikes

By Viola Jernigan

People require nothing less than absolute practicality from a city bike due to the nature of urban lifestyles. A city bike is made for shorter travel than mountain bikes, but this does not make it any less useful, given that its main concern is utility. Danish-made utility bikes are usually made with aluminum frames, or "aluminium kozijnen" in Dutch terms.

Other features of Dutch bikes include a skirt guard, front suspension fork with headlights, single- to three-speed internal hub gears, child seats and sturdy fenders. Because of the wide availability of aluminium, bicycle makers can afford to sell quality bikes for lower prices. A fine utility bike can be lifted easily when needed, and some may even be folded up for greater convenience.

Dutch bikes are consequentially fashioned for the very tall Dutch people. Most speed bikes require a rider to bend over and forward to reach the handlebars, but utility bikes let you sit straight instead. There are various sizes for utility bikes that may be selected to fit your own frame.

The first Dutch bikes are manufactured in single-speed up to three-speed gears. When you live in the city, speed is not your primary priority, so utility bikes forgo higher speeds most of the time. Bike manufacturers take into account the likely terrain over which their products shall be travelling, and thus produce models with limited speeds.

There are a multitude of items used for the manufacture of bikes, all with varying compositions. A good bike makes use of only high-quality materials for parts such as the fenders, in order to ensure longevity for the entire piece. Mudflaps and bumpers are helpful additions to fenders of city bikes.

Taillights and headlamps on the classic Dutch bikes had to draw power from largish batteries or generators. The generator technology featured electrical generation via kinetics. There are still some bikes that use the older, traditional bulbs for their headlamps, but LEDs are the standard now.

Dutch bikes also have some of the more basic yet practical features important to any biker. One thing to be wary of if you do get a good bike is security: you need to make sure that your bike has the features necessary for preventing it. Good treads, decently-sized wheels, and strong metal figure in the creation of a good bicycle's wheels.

Dutch models have inspired a great many manufacturers all around the world, including Gazelle and Batavus. To date, some American and Chinese bicycle manufacturers have recreated the features of Dutch bikes in more contemporary bike designs. Bike usage in Europe is pretty high, so a good range of bike models are represented across the continent, from contemporary ones to the classics.

Some high-end bicycles of other types need regular maintenance, but utility bikes need far less attention. Its body made of aluminium kozijnen is easy to clean and rust proof. Excellent utility bikes made of high-quality materials can stand rain, sleet and snow very well, which means they may be parked right by the street, exposed to the elements.

A bicycle used specifically for city roads is called a Stadsfiets by the Dutch. The Stadsfiets is an iconic design, one that has made it the inspiration for many other city bikes. When on the market for a city bike, you need to search for one that has an aluminium kozijnen, the appropriate gear system, and a comfy feeling in usage.
