Where can I store my bike?

By Henry Dover

Thinking about how and where to store your bike is a harder decision that it may first appear. You need to look at the resources you have at your disposal as well as a few other factors you will need to take into account, such as how secure it is, the storage capacity and exactly where your bike will fit within the allotted space. These are just a few of the points you should consider. A shed, or wall and ceiling mounting are the more commonly known methods of bike storage.

Each option has both pros and cons but there is likely one which will be more suitable for you. If you don't have space outside, then obviously you can rule out the option of storing it in a shed, leaving the two mounted options. Let us look at all three options, noting some of those pros and cons.

Wall mounted storage. If you have a garage, this is a feasible option and will not cause a problem in terms for having space for your car as the bike will be mounted high enough to keep that space available. The only disadvantage is that you will need to lift the bike each time that you mount it. Cycloc wall mounts are flexible as they can be used in the office as well as at home, and they also look great, design-wise.

Ceiling mounted storage. The main benefit of this is the same as in wall mounted storage as there is no space taken up on the floor. A further benefit is that some models of this type of storage come with winch type system. If you don't find lifting your bike easy, this is an ideal solution. You simply have to attach two hooks, one beneath the saddle and another, on to the handlebars. The main disadvantage is the price, costing two or even three times the amount of standard wall mounted storage.

Bike storage shed. If you have outdoor space available, this could be the method which suits you the most as you will be able to protect it from poor weather conditions and you will have the further benefit of storing further items, which, of course, can include cycling accessories. It isn't affordable for everyone, however, especially wooden sheds as they have an annual maintenance fee attached.
