Five new Road Bikes for 2012

By Elizabeth Warrington

The new road bikes for 2012 are an exciting prospect. Whether you're looking for top of the range racing, or a more everyday thing, there's plenty to look out for. These are just a handful of the top models that are about to be on offer.

It makes sense to start with the dream machine. The Specialised Mclaren Venge is quite possibly the best road racing bike every built. The standard Mclaren Venge is already known for being an incredible beast of a bike, but this thing goes even further towards perfection. The manufacturers have cut down one hundred grams of weight and worked on a perfect head tube spacer for the best possible streamlined riding. The result is a ridiculously fast frame, on some very nifty Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels. All this for only...12,000. But then it is as good as it gets.

The lower end range has been occupied by Langsters for a while now, but this year they're set to get a bit more radical. The designs on all new models have gone for the velodrome look, and that really does give them an extra speed boost. A Langster Pro Frameset comes with 'space grade plastic' frame, whatever that means, while the great little Specialised Langster is available for only 500.

There are a couple of new Langsters that deserve a mention. As the lower-end bike of choice, they're usually pretty basic in their aspirations. But with the onset of 2012, things are getting shaken up a little. The Langster Pro Frameset has a plastic frame that's really light, and offers a slick ride. Perhaps most exciting is the price tag on the specialised Langster, which has a new velodrome shape for only 500.

The Tricross isn't a cyclo-cross, whatever the name might suggest, but it is a really good, sturdy road bike. This year sees it getting updated with swanky internal cabling - a good feature to protect from weather conditions - brake discs and mudguard. All of this makes it the bike of choice for getting from A to B at impressive speed.
