In America's current economy, many Americans are looking for ways to save some coin. People are forgoing driving themselves to work in favor of carpooling with coworkers. Others have forgone driving all together and have begun to utilize public transportation as their preferred method of travel. However, there are some people who have made the decision to bike to work; they ride a commuter bike to not only to save money, but also the environment and acquire a healthier lifestyle.

In the United States, the cost of a gallon of gas is $4.00. Anyone can see how this can quickly add up. Oil reserves are decreasing, which means that the price of gas will continue to increase. It's simple supply and demand. And because public transportation also replies on gas, the price of bus passes and the like is also increasing. Commuter bikes, also known as road bikes, can cost anywhere from $800 to a couple thousand dollars. However, the cost-benefit analysis still shows you save time and money when you travel by bike.

When comparing a bike rider with a driver, studies have demonstrated that the former are generally happier and healthier than the latter. Traveling by car can be stressful. The United States Environmental Protection Agency stated that pedaling one mile saves about one pound of carbon dioxide. Moreover, utilizing a commuter bike is a built-in exercise routine. A commuter bike will get you where you need to go while helping to get into, or stay in shape.

Using a commuter bike is the most cost-effective substitute for driving yourself to work. Biking allows you to save hundreds of dollars that would otherwise be used to purchase gas. It also requires you to learn to manage your time. Another benefit is that you are lessening your carbon foot print, while increasing your activity and setting yourself up for a healthier lifestyle. Before you decide to start commuting by bike, make sure that you know your region and if biking will actually prove advantageous to you in your current community.
