City Bikes are Better Than Walking

By Pamela Chiacchiaro

I was in the city the other day. I always say "the city" as if the entire world knows exactly which city I am talking about-New York City, of course. And I bet that right now you are picturing the city in your head, with all of its elegance and dirtiness. Being a Long Island girl, I never really feel at home in the city even though I go there quite frequently. I never can get used to the noise and volumes of people and taxis and buses and city bikes whizzing by.

I could be on the other end of the city but I always try to find time to get to Central Park. Central Parks is perhaps my most favorite spots in the city and I love its attempt at bringing the wilderness to urban society. The only thing that I really do not like are the horses that are enslaved and made to pull heavy carriages all day long in the heat or cold. Horses do not have a place in the city. But I digress.

In this day and age there are so many modes of transportation that people can use, and none involve any animals. In the city, people have the option of taking buses, taxis, subways, trains, motorbikes, cars, and bicycles. If I lived in the city, I would definitely invest in a good city bike, like ones made by Linus, and use it to go everywhere. Not-to-mention it is free!

Around my hometown, automobiles are the most sought after methods of transportation. I always wonder if the world would be better off if everyone just chose to use bicycles as transportation. Not only would people get more exercise, but the overall world pollution would greatly decrease. I would not mind riding bikes everyday.

The city is not exactly the best place for cars, which is why most people just opt to walk. But bicycles are always a great option and should never be overlooked.
