Why Cyclists Should Consider Using Chamois Butter

Serious cyclists are prone to chafing in sensitive areas from sitting on a bicycle and pedaling for extended periods. As friction builds up between the shorts and skin, the rider experiences inflammation, irritation and the possibility of developing a painful infection. Chamois butter offers a solution to this embarrassing problem by lubricating the area and reducing friction.

The term saddle sore indicates any type of skin problem occurring due to contact between the seat and the body. As the fabric rubs against the skin, the chafing produces red abrasions on the skin's surface that become inflamed and painful. The hair follicle is at risk of developing an infection around the base. When pus accumulates in the region, pimples form. Individuals who fail to treat this condition can end up with a serious infection.

Different products contain different active ingredients. Manufacturers of some products include preservatives called parabens and alcohol. Others contain only natural ingredients. These formulas reduce friction where the body contacts the bicycle, soothe irritated skin, prevent bacterial and fungal growth and moisturize. Infection is a major concern if bacteria and fungus thrive.

Menthol is a common ingredient in these creams. Menthol is an effective topical analgesic that provides the rider relief from minor aches and pains associated with long periods of cycling. Vitamin E is an ingredient that provides lubrication to reduce chafing.

The padding in cycling shorts, called the chamois, can chafe the skin anywhere it is in direct contact. Specific product directions and personal preference determine whether the production application is on the fabric or skin. Products will wash readily out of most fabrics.

Applying chamois butter before riding is an effective way to reduce the risk of developing painful and dangerous saddle sores. Riders should always wear proper attire, practice good hygiene and ensure the seat of the bike sits at the proper height. Mountain bike riders and endurance riders alike will be capable of riding longer with less pain.
