The word vintage brings to mind hot summer days and classic cars, drive in movies and comic books. It evokes different memories for everyone. For many, a trip back in time is to be transported to a more care free era. Now when reaching for a memory one might think of vintage BMX bikes - what model constitutes an original idea.

A Magazine distributed in 1956 Holland shows the first images of the sport that would eventually turn into modern day bicycle motocross. Almost twenty years passed before the sport burst it's way onto the scene. The state of California during the early 70's may have been dancing and surfing until a hot summer brought extreme street bike racing to the foreground.

The main ingredient here is dirt. Motocross tracks were said to be the original inspiration for the sport. While the records of the day were spinning the kids of the early 70's were converting their Schwinn stingray bikes into earth riding trick machines. The size and style of this particular model of bike made emulating motocross professionals was a breeze.

Courses were showing up all over the United States. Bikes became airborne as they flew over the dips and raises common in motocross. BMX showed up in dry pools where skateboarders were already riding. The invention of tricks like the bunny hop, and the tail whip, both aerials on a street bike made the motorized counterparts jealous.

Mono-shock frames, an adjustment to the original, were some of the first changes that began to give these machines a category of their own. Now a staple, V shaped handle bars were also invented. Further still, spokes located beneath the pedals shaped and assisted in the growth of so many tricks that now define the sport.

Customizing bikes was also a favored way of making a mark. Original colors and graphics were an excellent way to set a model apart. Some chose to include parts from earlier brands like the banana seat. Having other hand made or unique components was just another way to show one's dedication to the sport.

The sport of BMX is young in comparison to others. However this does not mean it can't have classic aspects. Vintage BMX bikes - what makes them unique when standing next to a modern version is a matter of history.
