Chamois Cream Cures Cycling-Caused Chafing

By Katerina Borowski

Serious bikers all know how uncomfortable chafing can be. Applying chamois cream before going for your ride will keep you from getting a rash. The sensitive skin on your upper thighs and perineum is easily irritated when constantly rubbed against your shorts or bike seat.

Your perineum and groin area gets very warm and wet with sweat when riding. This is the perfect place to harbor bacteria. A rash is actually tiny cuts in your skin, so any microbes can get in and start an infection.

The type of seat you use and the material of your shorts can also cause or deter irritation. Wearing shorts that do not slide across the skin with each pedal is best for keeping friction to a minimum. Get a narrow seat so your legs do not rub against the sides.

Sitting back on your seat or standing to pedal will also decrease the rubbing action between your legs. Make sure you wash the area before and after you ride to get rid of any sweat, dirt and bacteria. Washing your shorts after every ride is important too.

Any time there is an increase in the temperature, carry the cream with you to apply at every break. If there is a restroom nearby, wash the area well before it on. Be sure to wash your bike seat and shorts too. Stop the minute you feel the itching burn, stop, wash the area and reapply the cream.

Every cyclist should have a tube of chamois cream handy on every ride. It can be used before, during or after you go out and will keep you from being uncomfortable. With regular use, you can forget all about chafing and the pain that goes along with it; even when you participate in long distance races.
